Heraclitus the Obscure, the Philosopher

Summary/Abstract: According to legend, Pythagoras was the one who inaugurated the use of the term “philosophy” — “love, friendship for wisdom.” As for the notion of “philosopher,” however, it was Heraclitus who is said to have used it for the first time. In fact, identifying the origin of such important terms does not mean discovering their first use, but only their earliest written attestation. Their first oral use in the living language of the ancient Greeks will remain forever unknown to us.
