Summary/Abstract: The culture of the cities of Dnieper Ukraine has a considerable historiography. This problem became the subject of study in the works of researchers of the imperial era. The need for historiographical analysis of the scientific achievements of scientists of previous periods is undoubted. After all, without reference to the past and understanding of scientific knowledge, full-fledged historical research is simply impossible. Therefore, the authors set the task to determine the main approaches to this topic in imperial historiography, to analyze the pre-Soviet scientific literature and to determine the degree of study of the cultural history of cities of Dnieper Ukraine in 1785–1917. It was found that during the imperial era, scientists achieved some success in the study of urban culture, accumulated a lot of factual material and approached the definition of the object of study. It is noted that in pre-Soviet historiography certain theoretical and methodological approaches were developed, first of all historical-legal, socio-economic and historical-geographical. At the end of the imperial period, a «sectoral» approach to the study of urban culture was formed – if at the beginning of the period the city in historical-statistical and historical-geographical studies appears as a certain «integrity», then at the turn of XIX – XX centuries. it begins to «blur» between different scientific disciplines. It is established that the culture of the cities of the Dnieper region in the imperial historiography did not become the subject of a special study, but was integrated into the work on urban issues in general. Usually, these works were not generalizing holistic studies, so they can only get superficial, disparate information about certain aspects of cultural life of cities. It is determined that the historiography of the imperial era made a certain contribution to the study of life and way of life of the townspeople. However, these issues were considered mostly in fragments, as the attention of researchers was usually focused on the lives of members of the privileged urban strata. At the same time, many problems of cultural development of the cities of the Dnieper region during this period were not even raised.
