Summary/Abstract: The paper examines hierarchical relationships among the Serbian medieval nobility. Based on the few available sources, it can be concluded that there were nobles who were subordinate to more powerful members of the elite class. An indirect approach employed to explore the nature of the dependence of the lesser nobles on the more prominent counterparts. In order to find that answer, special attention is paid to the system of hierarchical relations among the Hungarian nobility. The subordination of the lesser nobility to the magnates was one of the key factors leading to the rise of regional lords during the reign of Emperor Uroš.
