Summary/Abstract: The health of students has always been in the center of attention of research and teaching staff of higher educational institutions, doctors and teachers. For various objective and subjective reasons, the problem of improving students’ health, as one of the most important tasks of Ukrainian society, has not yet been solved and needs to be solved as soon as possible. The article provides statistical information indicating that the health status of higher education applicants is at an unsatisfactory level. This alarming statistic was discovered even before the spread of coronavirus infection (COVID – 19) began. With the beginning of the pandemic, this situation has only worsened. The article contains a list of reasons that negatively affect the health status of students, reduce the level of their physical fitness and performance, which effects the quality of life and indicators in academic training. Among them, the following reasons can be distinguished: the inability to conduct practical physical education classes classes during the quarantine period; reduction in the number of academic hours for the discipline «Physical Education»; weak material and technical base; insufficient level of professional training of specialists; low motivation of students to engage in motor activity. The article notes the role of physical education teachers working at general university departments of Physical Culture, Sports and Basic Health. They form students’ positive attitude to health. The search for ways to improve the health of higher education applicants during their studies in higher education institutions is theoretically justified. Practical recommendations are given to research and teaching staff of the Departments of Physical Culture, which will contribute to the formation of a culture of health among students. This will enable future specialists to improve their health and fitness level.
