Summary/Abstract: The new mayor of Leningrad, Anatoly Sobchak, who presents himself as a liberal democrat, will recruit Putin as an adviser at the recommendation of the regional KGB general. Did it matter that Sobchak had been Putin’s professor at the law faculty? Or was it, on the contrary, a way for the KGB to control the mayor through one of its trusted men? Probably a bit of both.
