Summary/Abstract: Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends — I say dear friends because there are many people here whom I know — I would first like to express my special thanks to Spandugino Publishing House, which had the idea of republishing, more than 25 years after its first appearance, The Black Book of Communism in a solid and comprehensive scholarly edition, thoughtfully accompanied by a photographic appendix. For me, and for Romanians as well, this is truly a publishing event. My heartfelt thanks go to this publishing house, as well as to the Memorial of the Victims of Communism and of the Resistance and to the Academia Civică Foundation, for their warm welcome in their spaces, all the more so since the Sighet Memorial has been, since 1999, the defining place of my encounter with Romanians.
