Summary/Abstract: Dariusz Bitner’s Fiction is a monumental novel that, upon its publication, met with a reception that was both expressive and emotional. This study’s critical reception of this work is accompanied by an attempt to recontextualize the devices, techniques, figures, and narrative devices Bitner employs. Bitner’s use of spectral intertextuality seems crucial here, creating the impression of a persistent anti-sentimental character embedded in Fiction. Rather than writing “for the reader”, Bitner writes “against” a specific type of sentimental reader, creating a kind of anti-address for his work – this ostentatious gesture can be associated with postmodernism, Raymond Roussel’s novel Locus Solus, while Bitner’s outrageous, pornographic train plot can be associated with The Decameron
