Summary/Abstract: This article chisels out the thesis that professionalism is something that is constantly being shaped, something that “is always ahead of us, so any complacency must be considered premature” (Witkowski 2018: 135). The question, therefore, of continuous professional and personal self-development and of ‘becoming’ a teacher is dictated today not only by the numerous and increasingly traumatic transformations of the world. The contemporary teacher has to be open and sensitive to them, and manifest the ability to deal with uncertainty, duality, ambivalence of the phenomena and problems of life. He or she has to teach how to live, how to be, who to be, and what to aim for. The quality and effectiveness of these activities can be ensured by a proficiency in self-education.
