Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the importance of historical sources for the history lesson topics on Ukrainian culture, in particular within the boundaries of the Kyiv region. Within the framework of this topic, the authors emphasize a dominant role of the University of St. Volodymyr (now Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University) in the development of education and science in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Due to the analysis of a wide range of the historical sources, it was possible to establish that the most objective perspective on historical issues can be achieved through analyzing archival materials. The authors established that the documents from the State Archive of the Kyiv Region (DAKO), Fund 1  Kyiv Provincial Board, confirm the activities of the university for which the permission of the Kyiv Governor-General was necessary, for example: the activities of the Commission for the description of the provinces of the Kyiv School District, conducting scientific works, etc. Some documents from the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine also store information about the opening of the university and the activities of its scientists in various public organizations. Documents from the fund 442  Office of the Governor-General of Kyiv, Podilsk and Volhynia  store information about the general state of education development in the region, the closing of Kremenets Lyceum and the opening of Kyiv University; documents from the fund 707  Kyiv School District Administration  preserve essential information about the first period of activity, when all issues of the university’s functioning were approved by the trustee of the Kyiv School District. Archival materials of the fund No. 731 contain information about the activities of the Kyiv Society of Agriculture and Agricultural Industry, whose members were also professors of the Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr S.M. Khodetskyi, S.M. Bohdanov and D.I. Pikhno. In addition to the archival materials, the article also pays attention to newspapers and magazines, which can be read in more detail in the article itself.
