Summary/Abstract: Descending form a family of peasants, Ovidiu Bîrlea loved all forms of artistic expression of the people. Throughout his scientific work, the analysis of the folklore text is often accompanied by information from the sphere of folk music and dance, which demonstrates the importance the author attaches to one of the fundamental features of folklore: syncretism. This feature is the reason why he believes that folklore research must be carried out by teams in which the folklorist is accompanied by the musicologist and the choreographer. In his opinion, ignoring the deep connection between texts, song and dance in folklore creation is a sign of dilettantism. Ovidiu Bîrleaʼs interest in folk dance, about which very little had been written until his research, led to the publication, in 1982, of the volume Essay about the Romanian Folk Dance. Here, the author tries to provide the most accessible image of this art form that is very present in the life of the peasant from all time. The conclusion of all his observations is that the Romanian folk dance is among the most varied and full of meanings in the entire European folklore.
