Summary/Abstract: The first eighteen verses of the Gospel according to John are recognised in specialised literature as the “prologue” or introduction. Its importance is not only due to its uniqueness compared to the rest of the Gospel writings, but also because it contains terms that characterise St John's theology: “Word” (λόγος), “fullness” (πληρώματος), “grace” (χάρις) and “truth” (ἀλήθεια). Focusing strictly on the term “grace”, it is notable that it appears only four times in the Gospel, and only in the prologue (John 1:14, 16, 17). This is very little compared to Paul's writings, but these verses should not be overlooked. They demonstrate the theological depth of the role of grace in Christ and in the economy of human salvation, thus summarising the theology of grace developed by Saint Paul the Apostle in his letters.
