Summary/Abstract: On the basis of the Byzantine custom of the “symphonic” relationship between State and Church, Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi had, in his capacity as head of the Church of Moldavia, not only a major spiritual role but also an important role in the governance of the country. The period of Russian occupation, linked to the Russo–Turkish War (1828–1829), was extremely difficult: to the political and economic abuses of the occupying army was added the imposition of essential legislative changes through the drafting and enforcement of The Organic Regulation. Thus, the political role, prestige, and influence of the Church and its representatives were drastically reduced. By secularizing the state, Romanian legislation made the transition toward modernity.
