Summary/Abstract: The cosmogonic myth is common in archaic mythologies, which tell of the creation of the world from the slain body of a sacred ancestor. This act serves as the primal sacrifice – a prototype that is recreated in the ritual practices of ancient peoples, as well as in the motif of initiation. The text interprets the story of Medea from Euripides’ tragedy precisely through this cosmogonic paradigm, according to which the heroine must walk the torturous path, repeating archetypal gestures, in order to find the center of her own being. Lars von Trier’s third film is an adaptation of this part of Medea’s wider narrative – the main object in the text. In it, the director shows the clash of human and natural elements, which culminate in the symbolic act of Creation, interpreted through the cosmogonic meaning of water.
