Summary/Abstract: This study examines the creative practices of three precursors of modern Romanian poetry from the late 18th to the mid-19th century: Ienăchiță Văcărescu, Costache Conachi, and Vasile Cârlova, who were regarded by literary critics as the first pre-Romantic poets and founders of modern Romanian literature. Ienăchiță Văcărescu performs a quasi-demiurgic act of poetic invention, forging his own aesthetic tools and shaping a Romanian literary language suited to simple, direct verse. His contemporary, Costache Conachi, often compared to Petrarch for his erotic focus, self-centered poetics, and tonal novelty, adopts the same popular monorhymed model but applies it to the emotional turmoil of love. The younger Vasile Cârlova, writing alongside the rise of French Romanticism, develops in his brief oeuvre a distinct style marked by genuine lyrical intensity. Together, these pioneers provide the cultural and linguistic groundwork on which later Romanian literature builds its enduring structure.
