Summary/Abstract: This article examines the evolution of residential façades in Algeria as a reflection of the country’s social, cultural, and urban transformations. Once associated with the introversion of traditional housing — with its discreet façades, interior courtyards, and hierarchical thresholds — the façade has changed its role under the influence of colonization, rapid urbanization, and the modernist models imposed after independence. From a simple protective screen, it has become an expressive surface, open to the city and carrying new social meanings. Through a corpus ranging from the appropriation of colonial buildings to contemporary projects, the analysis reveals a hybrid dynamic where memory, modernity, simplicity, and innovation intertwine, while opening new research perspectives on the impact of social changes, technological innovations, local materials, and everyday appropriations in Algeria’s urban landscape.
