Summary/Abstract: In this study, we are looking at the way language is used to construct love in Radu Paraschivescu’s novel Cu inima smulsă din piept. We realize that these constructions are concentrated mostly in the first half of the novel, as the rest of the work is mainly concerned with the political plots in the story. We start from the very striking images thrown at us in the introductory fragments, which also constitute due justification for this research. We analyze the different ways in which love is presented, starting with the poetic, lyrical, philosophical, spiritual and elevated one at the beginning, then plunging into the medieval Court world to notice a vulgar, carnivalesque, jesters’ outlook on it, combined with a practical-minded, strategic one, which makes us derive the notion of love being downgraded in this environment in more ways than one. The Conclusions summarize the findings at both content and stylistic levels. The approach is discourse studies, linguistics combined with cultural and identity studies.
