Summary/Abstract: The text examines the significance of homeland and mother tongue in Herta Müller's work and shows how her biographical experiences under the Romanian dictatorship have shaped her literary perspective. Müller's ‘foreign perspective’ does not arise from a change of location, but from the loss of security, trust and language in repressive everyday life. The author moves between languages, cultures and identities, whereby language becomes home, threat and means of resistance at the same time. Her literature combines subjective experiences with universal questions of identity, foreignness and memory. This article shows that Müller's writing breaks down the boundaries between reality and fiction and opens up a new form of perception that transcends territorial attributions.
