Summary/Abstract: Nicolae Iorga’s travel notes on the Banat at the beginning of the 20th century provide a nuanced portrait of a multiethnic region where cultural identities intersect yet remain distinct. He focuses primarily on rural Romanian communities, whose traditional lifestyle, architecture and demographic vitality contrast with the more mixed and urban settings of Timișoara or Lugoj. Iorga highlights the selective adoption of foreign cultural models, the persistence of Romanian identity, and the historical differences between mountain and lowland populations. His observations reveal both the complexity of Banat’s cultural landscape and the subtle mechanisms through which ethnic groups preserved their individuality.
