Ecumenical dialogue between the Catholic Church and classical Pentecostal Communities: introductory framework to the issue

Summary/Abstract: After the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church opened itself to ecumenical dialogue, which also involves Pentecostal communities, today the fastest growing Christian reality. Born in the United States with the events of Topeka (1901) and Azusa Street (1906),the movement is distinguished by its personal experience of God, its return to Scripture and its ‘baptism in the Holy Spirit’ as a personal Pentecost. It has experienced several “waves”,the first of which is known as ‘classical Pentecostalism’. Today, Pentecostal and charismatic communities represent about one-third of world Christianity. Since 1972, the Catholic Church has initiated official dialogue with some of them, by the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity. This study aims to offer an introduction to this dialogue, illustrating its development and main guidelines.
