The question of eucharistic hospitality in ecumenical dialogue and the document “La Cena del Signore”

Summary/Abstract: This article is a presentation of the issue of Eucharistic hospitality in the ecumenical dialogue of the Catholic Church with the Churches and ecclesial communities with reference to the text ‘La Cena del Signore’ (2019), which is an ecumenical appeal by two Italian theologians for an open Eucharistic communion practised on the basis of baptism. The themes addressed are highly topical in contemporary ecumenical dialogue. Based on the documents of the Church and the Leuenburg Concordia, a Catholic and Protestant treatment of the issue is first presented, followed by a discussion and critique of the text. The whole leads to the conclusion that, although there is a desire for such unity among Christians, manifesting it at the Eucharistic table is currently impossible in the light of Catholic theology.
