Summary/Abstract: The aim of this text is to clarify the relationships between politics and the form of furniture designed at the time, as well as to show the administrative determinants that ruled the work of designers, by means of an analysis of the central management in reference to the furniture industry and an elucidation of this industry’s structure. The relationships between the various interdependent elements—designers, factories, and supervisory bodies—were reconstructed on the basis of materials in the archives of the Furniture Industry Federation (Zjednoczenie Przemysłu Meblarskiego) in Poznań—an institution that united and managed key furniture factories and the scientific and research facilities of the furniture industry in Poland during the communist era. Research into the centrally controlled production system that takes into account various aspects of the designing process and factory operations makes it possible to verify the possible sources of a given form, the materials used, and the themes undertaken by designers in general.
