Summary/Abstract: Maria Rubczak (1882–1955) was a self-taught painter and the wife of painter and graphic artist Jan Rubczak. Linked with Paris and Cracow, she painted small-format oils and watercolours, mainly genre scenes. She signed her works with her surname or the pseudonym Guy Bertin (sometimes also Guy Bertin Rubczak). She exhibited her works in Paris, including at the Salon des Indépendants and the Musée Crillon. She also took part in events organised by the Polish artistic colony in Paris. After the Second World War, she exhibited in, among others, Cracow, Bydgoszcz, and Łódź. At that time, she painted pictures promoting the communist regime and its ideology. Rubczak’s oeuvre is scattered and only fragmentarily known. In this article, I have attempted to supplement the current state of research and present hitherto unknown facts from the life of Maria Rubczak, based on, among others, unpublished archival materials (including correspondence with Olga Boznańska).
