Summary/Abstract: The article describes the ethnic component of the nobility living in the territory of Southern Ukraine in the nineteenth century. Since the second half of the eighteenth century, the southern Ukrainian lands, which at that time were part of the tsarist empire, became a zone of active promotion and formation of the regional aristocracy, which had a number of important and distinctive features in relation to the general imperial nobility. An important feature of the nobility of the southern Ukrainian provinces was its multiethnicity. The article analyses the peculiarities of the formation of noble groups representing aristocrats with Ukrainian, Polish, German, Greek, Italian, and Moldovan roots; it also analyses their influence on the economic, administrative, cultural, and religious development of the southern Ukrainian lands. In addition, a rather specific type of regional nobility was formed in southern Ukraine, which adhered not only to traditional forms and sectors, but was also highly oriented towards entrepreneurship and the introduction of advanced European technologies and machinery. The third defining feature of the southern Ukrainian nobility was its cultural and educational mission, which allowed it to spread European educational and cultural traditions in the region.
