THE SYSTEM OF VALUES AND THE IDEAL OF MAN IN THE MEDIEVAL CULTURE

Summary/Abstract: The system of values and the ideal of a person in medieval culture has been studied. Interest in the cultural heritage of the Middle Ages, the worldview of medieval man, the world of his ideas and feelings is explained by the fact that socio-cultural centers and individual regions of medieval civilization became sources of important innovations and determined the fate of European culture for the future. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental features of the European culture of the Middle Ages, which researchers associate with the determining role of the Christian church in various spheres of social and cultural life. The powerful force of Christianity opened up new horizons for further historical progress for the European peoples. The important role of the problems of moral development in the value system of the medieval man is substantiated, the main principles of which were formed in the era of Late Antiquity. After all, it was then that a person very acutely experienced the feeling of loss of organic unity with nature and the social world, which was collapsing, and sought spiritual refuge and faith in the future in the Christian religion. Searching for his own meaning of life, man gradually expanded the boundaries of individual consciousness to the general, universal. It is noted that the unconditional social ideal of the medieval era was chivalry. Chivalry created a special secular culture that won the fight against the spiritual and religious principle. The special understanding of the aesthetic in the mind of the average person of the medieval era is analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that the historical and cultural achievements and traditions of the Middle Ages should play an important role in determining the new worldview priorities of modern man.
