Summary/Abstract: The relevance of the study is related to the need to study the relationship between verbal and visual storytelling in the narrative structure of the graphic novel, which can be used in various aspects of the educational process and upbringing. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to study the aesthetics and poetics of the contemporary foreign graphic novel and its educational potential. The author explores the aspects of the formation and development of comic book culture as a synthetic artistic phenomenon that was formed in America in the late nineteenth century on the example of the works of Richard Felton Outcault, Jerry Siegel, Will Eisner, Art Spiegelman, Alan Moor, Neil Gaiman, and Gene Luen Yang. The author analyzes the poetics and specifics of the graphic novel's artistic design, which distinguishes it from other media such as literature or painting and the specific features of the American "comic book tradition" and the Asian "manga tradition." The author proves that comics can be a powerful tool for teaching in literature classes. They can engage students, facilitate understanding of complex texts and ideas, and develop critical thinking skills. Visuals in comics can help students better understand complex topics or abstract ideas that are difficult to explain in words. For example, a philosophical concept or historical event can be presented in a visual and accessible way. The use of educational comics can help make connections between literature and other subjects, such as history, art, or social studies. For example, historical comics can be used to study specific historical periods or events. Comics that focus on different types of art or national versions of mythology from different countries will successfully complement the foreign literature program to broaden students' horizons in terms of synthesizing the arts. To develop creative skills and gain a deeper understanding of the material, students can create their own comics based on the readings using media technologies for creating educational comics. Using the Pixton service, it is easy to create both a short adaptation of the plot and an original story inspired by the themes or characters of the work and provide a commentary on any drawing. This activity will make the learning process more interesting and dynamic, and will contribute to a deeper understanding and assimilation of the material.
