Summary/Abstract: The present article highlights some of the consequences of the adoption of the Law regarding the Maximum Communal Taxes in 1893, promoted by the Conservative government led by Lascăr Catargiu, establishing the limits of the local taxes on manufactured products. The Liberal opposition exploited the law politically, spreading rumors that the peasants would be taxed for household goods and even for their children. These rumors sparked discontent and peasant uprisings in several counties of Moldavia. One episode of these revolts was recorded in a manuscript held at the Romanian Academy Library - Iași Branch, as well as in the press of the time, describing the incidents that took place in the villages of Glăvănești and Muncelu (now in Bacău County). Believing they were being treated unjustly, the locals rose up against the authorities. The revolts were suppressed by the army at the end of February 1894, but they succeeded in bringing to light deep social tensions and the peasants’ lack of trust in the political leadership of the period.
