Summary/Abstract: There has long been a widespread belief that intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs primarily in heterosexual relationships and that heterosexual cisgender women are the most common victims of domestic violence. Statistics show that LGBT+ people face disproportionately high rates of intimate partner violence and sexual assault compared to cisgender, heterosexual people. This belief that IPV only or primarily affects heterosexual cisgender women prevents many LGBT+ people from realizing that they may be in an abusive relationship and that they have the right to seek protection from their abuser.
