Summary/Abstract: The Austrian nobleman G.Ch. Fernberger, while being on a diplomatic mission to Istanbul on behalf of Emperor Rudolf II, took the opportunity to make a visit to the Holy Grave. His curiosity soon took over his pious zeal, thus turning the pilgrimage into an adventure. Fernberger travelled through Sinai, Egypt, the Portuguese India, and his return trip with the merchant caravans followed the roads of Iran and Anatolia. From Istanbul he travvelled through Bulgaria, Dobrudga, Moldova, Poland, Lithuania and Livonia. He finally arrived to Viena in 1593. His accounts on Dobrudga and Moldova bear witness to his incessant curiosity, although his many and enormous confusions show that his discernment was not always accurate.
