Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the role of small political parties in the political process in Bulgaria during the politically dynamic years of 1989-1992. The analysis is carried out through the theoretical model of political opportunity, resource mobilization and the formation of political identities. A methodology based on historical institutionalism, a qualitative analysis of the then institutional political framework and a review of the modeling of small parties, with their ideological and organizational profile, was used. The results of this study show that small parties from the beginning of democratic changes have a fundamental importance for the development of political pluralism in Bulgarian democracy, acting as catalysts of these changes, regardless of their limited resources. The article offers an analytical framework for the model of political dynamics that accompanied the process of transformation of politics from one system of government to another. It is also an attempt to provoke a debate about the positive role of small party formations in the process of building a democratic system of government.
