Summary/Abstract: The article examines the depiction of Aurora Borealis in Western European painting. The emphasis has been given to the importance of works that show the depiction of this celestial phenomenon as the main constituent element of the composition. The study examinates the function of the artist, as a researcher, and points the attention on the artists as a part of scientific expeditions in the second half of XIX century.
