Summary/Abstract: The article examines the role of volcanic eruptions from the second half of the XVIII century in the landscape tradition of Western European painting. With an emphasis on the significance of some early works on the symbiosis between science and art, this study contributes to defining the role of the artist also as an explorer in the Age of Enlightenment.
