Summary/Abstract: While numerous arguments concerning civilizational tensions focus on material and power issue and tensions, the argument in this essay points out that the fundamental tensions consist of differences in the interpretation of the world for which peoples are willing to sacrifice their material interests. This means that even the so called “material interests” are not the basic force in civilizational tensions, since even they are meaningful to some and meaningless to others. Given this understanding, it can be maintained that all tensions are “spiritual.” After all, simply materially speaking, no one dies in order to eat better, but many are ready to die for the meanings which make sense of their lives and the entire universe. The age of materialism has yielded to the quest for meaning.
