Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between language culture, communicative skills, and transferable competencies, with a special focus on their application in the professional and public sectors. Language proficiency can be defined as the ability to use language accurately and appropriately in its spoken and written forms in a variety of settings. Kern (2000) develops a broad conceptual framework for understanding language proficiency that includes three dimensions of academic literacy: linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural. Language proficiency requires knowledge and skills in using language components. It also requires basic knowledge, critical thinking, and metacognitive skills, as well as understanding and applying cultural nuances, beliefs, and practices in context. Finally, language proficiency requires skills in using the four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—correctly for different purposes, in different situations, and with different audiences.
