Summary/Abstract: The article examines the contributions of Vassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee to the development of contemporary art and design and their work as artists, theorists and teachers at the Bauhaus. Part of the historical processes and prerequisites associated with the emergence of abstraction are mentioned. Emphasis is placed on the book “On the Spiritual in Art” - it is mentioned that it contains the most important reference texts, which are the basis for validating the ideas of abstractionism. The names of important artists and theorists who contributed to the change of expressive means of art in the XX century are listed. Emphasis is placed on the paradoxical nature of symbolic thinking and its relation to the mechanisms of creative act and the nature of abstract art. The psychological nature of the symbols is commented. The text also discusses Paul Clay’s contribution to the construction of a new artistic space in the twentieth century. It mentions his role in eliminating the principle of hierarchy between visual representation and verbal sign.
