Summary/Abstract: Jazz rhythms can range from simple to extremely complex. The often subtle and varied use of a multitude of simple and complex rhythms, all interwoven extemporaneously into one cohesive sound, is, perhaps more than any other element, what makes jazz, jazz. A growing consensus emerged that rhythm in early jazz was derived in large part from West African sources mediated by influences from Europe and elsewhere. Obviously, rhythm in jazz is a lot more than just a simple hybrid between the musical traditions of the cultures it has derived from. But how exactly these influences have combined has always been main topic of discussion among jazz musicians. Two of the main jazz styles – Ragtime and Latin jazz give the opportunity of tracing their origins through examining their history and evolution.
