Summary/Abstract: Over the centuries, the forms of tombstones have changed. In Poland, one can point to the old tombstone forms (from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century) and the new ones, occurring from the 19th century onwards. Old forms include stelae, tombstones and erratics. In turn, new forms include modified stelae, small architectural and sculptural forms, large architectural tombstones, ohels and family graves. Various stylistic solutions are visible in the new forms, starting from historicism, through orientalism and ending with modernism. New forms are the result of adopting customs from the Christian environment. On the other hand, it is a search for “traditional” Jewish forms, for example by inspiration from biblical texts.
