Summary/Abstract: Throughout human history, authoritarianism, i.e. “political systems in which a leader or occasionally a small group exercises power within formally ill-defined limits but quite predictable ones”1 has emerged, disappeared, and been revived many times and in many places much like the mythical Phoenix. The story of resurgent authoritarian regimes is repeated dozens of times throughout history.
