Summary/Abstract: Child abuse and neglect (CAN) has a significant impact on adolescents’ psychosocial and academic development. In this study we investigated the mediating role of risk factors (bullying involvement, mental health problems) and protective factors (perceived social support from parents, peers, and teachers) in the relationship between CAN and school adaptation. The sample consists of 326 adolescents, aged between 13 and 15 years. Results of the this study showed that adolescents with a history of CAN reported poorer school adaptation, more mental health difficulties, higher involvement in bullying (both as victims and perpetrators), and lower level of perceived social support. Mediation analyses revealed that bullying perpetration - agressor, anxiety/depression, social problems, and low support from parents and teachers significantly mediated the relation between CAN exposure and school adaptation.
