Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the correlation between civic activity and patriotism in relation to the contemporary concept of liberal democracy with its characteristic idea of civil society. The analysis focuses on the issue of freedom and its two formulations: classical and modern in the context of the common good as an axis of civic activity. It is pointed out that patriotism corresponds to civic activity insofar as its goal is the common good in caring for harmonious human development, i.e. for the two spheres of human life – material and moral. The article consists of four parts. Part 1 presents two conceptions of freedom, and the following parts present the consequences in the organization and functioning of society determined by differences in the understanding of freedom: the problem of social divisions (Part 2), different views of the common good (Part 3), and the crisis of citizenship (Part 4).
