Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” – Translation and Reception in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: This study explores how Ernest Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” has been received in Bulgaria through its published translations. In addition to a comparative analysis of the two existing Bulgarian versions of the novel, the article situates the work within the historical and cultural context of its creation. Particular attention is given to linguistic features of the original that pose significant challenges for translators, requiring well-reasoned and consistently applied strategies. The study also examines the various reprints of Dimitri Ivanov’s translation, uncovering signs of problematic editorial interventions. In conclusion, it addresses the question of whether a new Bulgarian translation of the novel is necessary.
