Summary/Abstract: The novels of Milen Ruskov have garnered considerable attention from literary criticism, with scholarly focus most often directed toward their postmodern traits and distinctive linguistic-stylistic features. The present study proposes a more narrowly focused reading that seeks to trace the presence and interaction of two distinct discourses embedded within the metafictional structure of the novels: the discourse of the picaresque novel and that of Gnosticism. The former is literary-historical in nature, while the latter is philosophical-religious. These two discourses do not function in isolation or merely for effect; rather, they serve as foundational elements in shaping both the formal and semantic character of the novels. They continuously interact and mutually transform one another’s defining attributes. Considering this, the study introduces a conceptual framework that integrates both phenomena: Picaresque Gnosticism. The nature of this concept and its manifestation in Ruskov’s first two novels constitute the primary subject of the present paper.
