Summary/Abstract: Regarding its origin, the Hungarian word “tér” (’space; to turn in a different direction’) can be classified in the ancient layer of Hungarian vocabulary. Presumably it originate from a verbal noun which used to have both substantive and verbal meanings; later these meanings have split, so during the language development the examined word has gained numerous new shades of meaning. The aim of the present research is a cognitive semantic interpretation of the word form “T-É-R” by exploring both its substantive and verbal meanings, and finding the probable semantic relations between them. At the same time, we also attempt to map the derivatives (derived or compound words) of the homonimous (nominal or verbal) word forms, using the cognitive adaptation of Czuczor–Fogarasi’s root pattern method. The corpus of examination will be based on the lexical and phraseological material gathered from different printed dictionaries or examples taken from available specialised online dictionaries.
