Summary/Abstract: The pecia system was devised by the university community as a means of speeding up the copying of books at a low cost to the consumer. This system is believed to have originated in the Italian city of Bologna and was first employed by Dominican scholars in the early thirteenth century. The „pecia system“ was a method used in some medieval universities, primarily during the 13th, 14th, and15th centuries, to produce multiple copies of manuscripts. It involved dividing official example manuscripts (exemplaria) into sections called „peciae“. These peciae were then rented out to scribes, who could copy them simultaneously, significantly speeding up the process of manuscript reproduction. The purpose of the system was to provide reliable copies of the works of antic and medieval authors in law, theology, philosophy and medicine. The system aimed to address the growing demand for texts within universities. The pecia system largely diminished by the 15th century as printing technology began to emerge.
