Summary/Abstract: The military operations in Prussia in 1659 bore the characteristics of siege warfare. The warring parties sought to capture cities and fortresses in order to gain control of the battlefield. The nature of the clashes favoured the Swedes, who, despite possessing smaller forces, compensated for their weakness by defending behind fortifications. The coalition forces lacked sufficient numbers of soldiers and artillery, which allowed the Swedes to hold on to the major cities—Malbork and Elbląg—while they evacuated smaller garrisons.
