Summary/Abstract: This article examines the multifaceted role of silence in A Book of Silence and selected stories by Sara Maitland from feminist, ecocritical, and narratological perspectives. Silence is portrayed as a physical, spiritual, and transformative experience, influencing both the subject matter and the narrative form. Maitland distinguishes between imposed silence and chosen silence, viewing the latter as a space for agency, contemplation, and connection with others. She highlights contexts in which silence gains new meanings – contemplative, physical, and sensual – along with its emergence as a non-anthropocentric mode of communication. Furthermore, the article explores how silence serves as a narrative tool, enabling the construction of stories that challenge dominant narrative patterns through elements such as rhythm, pause, and repetition.
