Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present the experiences of doctoral students in the social sciences and humanities regarding the sense and nonsense of academic work. The findings are based on individual in-depth interviews conducted with these students during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The sense of research was viewed through the lens of the quality and social relevance of the knowledge produced, as well as the ethical considerations surrounding social interactions within academia and with research participants. The factors that diminished the perceived sense of academic work primarily involved institutional issues, such as the precarious nature of academic employment, the overproduction of scientific research, and organizational chaos within academia.
