Summary/Abstract: This article explores discursive strategies used to delegitimize gender equality policies in academic settings. Drawing on data collected at a technical university, we examine how resistance to these policies is framed. The methodology is based on a qualitative analysis of written comments provided in surveys conducted among academic staff and students. Specifically, we focus on the mechanisms of linguistic hijacking that undermine the legit- imacy of equality-oriented actions. These mechanisms involve strategic redefinitions of key terms such as equality, meritocracy, and institutional neutrality. The analysis reveals that structural measures, such as setting minimum gender representation thresholds, are the most contested and often criticized in the name of freedom, efficiency, and the “purity of science.” We argue that linguistic resistance not only impedes policy implementation but also reinforces existing hierarchies and power structures, while simultaneously appearing to defend universal values. The findings shed light on the social reproduction of inequality mechanisms within academic institutions.
