Summary/Abstract: The article engages with different approaches to the concept of agency in social sciences, pointing to their limitations in the analysis of the experiences of women involved in the structures of religious organizations. The aim of the article is to present the concept of agency as a dimension of social action, reproducing the religious status quo, as well as to systematize the models of actions used in research on gender and religion, including Orit Avishai and Kelsy Burke conceptions. The text also exemplifies empirically the experiences of women in religious organizations of the Roman Catholic Church in terms of varied dimensions of agency. Empirical data come from the research undertaken within the frameworks of the two projects devoted to the relationship between gender and religion and conducted in Poland and in England. The article is based primarily on the results of individual in-depth interviews with women who are active in the organizations of the Catholic Church in Poland and in England in the Polish Catholic Missions.
