Summary/Abstract: Community archaeology has gained popularity in Hungary in recent years, but this activity rarely affects Palaeolithic sites. Knapped lithic implements, characteristic finds of this period, are believed to be difficult to even recognise without special training, because they are alien to our modern material culture. Thus, we assess the recognition efficiency of lithics by groups with different degrees of familiarity with Palaeolithic material culture, during a community archaeology survey at a Palaeolithic open-air surface site. Previously, the poor recognition of human-modified lithics by laypeople has only been known based on anecdotal information. Our study provides systematic data on recognition efficiency, which can be used to improve Palaeolithic site detection in the framework of community archaeology. Despite their difficult accessibility, Palaeolithic artefacts can be a meaningful and useful subject of negotiation between volunteers and specialists participating in such projects.
