Summary/Abstract: Wine was the most common drink in Dalmatia and Istria. It was not only an important part of peoples daily menu, but also an important feature of urban economy. Because of the importance it had in population’s daily life, the social, economic and religious regulation of the production, trade and consumption of wine was an integral part of urban statutes. Thus, the present article deals with the regulations of the local authorities concerned with the production of wine, its trade, import and export, the taxes and fees levied on it, the measures and the purity of the drink, the transport packaging in which it was sold at wholesale and retail, the price, and the way it was stored. The officials who controlled its production and sale, and the penalties for violating the above-mentioned rules are also examined in the article. Provisions concerning wine can be found in all town statutes from Dalmatia and Istria dated to the 13th–15th centuries.
